Seamstress at sewing machine altering wedding dress

I set up The Secret Fitting Room in 2016 from a small underground workshop as an independent bridal seamstress. The company has grown thanks to positive word of mouth and recommendations from many local bridal boutiques and our clients. Thank you so much.

We are now a team of four expert dressmakers and moved into our sewing atelier with two beautiful fitting rooms in our converted Buckinghamshire Victorian terrace in 2019. I am so proud that so far we have helped over 1,000 brides make their wedding dress even more perfect.

My beloved granny taught me how to sew as a child, and I was always drawing, designing and making dresses for my friends. I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2012 with a BA (Hons) in Costume Design and Construction. I also studied fashion and dressmaking at the London College of Fashion, part of the University of the Arts London.

The Secret Fitting Room is the result of my lifelong passion for quality and sustainable clothes for women.

It is so important to me that The Secret Fitting Room is a supportive haven for women away from everyday stresses. I want The Secret Fitting Room to be an antidote to the fashion and media industry’s damaging images and ideas around body size.  I believe that dresses should fit us, not the other way around.

We are a friendly and modern dressmaking company of women (not intentionally), for women. Alongside my team, and our wonderful customers including our brides, bridesmaids, and mother of the brides, I feel very lucky to be surrounded by strong, beautiful and kind women every day.

Please do email, call, or follow us on Instagram or Facebook. We’d love to hear from you and welcome you into The Secret Fitting Room.

Cathy graduated in 2009 from Nottingham Trent University with a BA (Hons) Design for Stage and Screen (Costume Design and Construction).  Nottingham Trent University is ranked one of the top ten UK universities for Art and Design.

She spent eight years working full time in the film and television industry in costume design and production, and still undertakes freelance commissions. Most recently, Cathy made the costumes (uniforms for the Apollo 11 astronauts) for the highly acclaimed BBC2 docudrama 8 Days: To the Moon and Back, which marked the 50th anniversary of the moon landings.

Cathy also owns her own business The Old Curiosity Costume Company which produces quality, handmade period clothing for men, women and children for any era. She receives varied commissions from all over the world, producing costumes for the Venice Carnival, Mayflower Pilgrim re-enactment events in the United States, to music video shoots in Berlin.

Cathy started working at The Secret Fitting Room in 2017. She is our in-house women’s tailoring expert, throws herself into any challenge and is irreplaceable!

Amy graduated in 2017 after making her own wedding dress collection. We snapped her up straight away and she has been working at The Secret Fitting Room ever since. We could not get by without Amy – for either her fantastic sewing skills or her great sense of humour.

Amy also produces ice skating costumes for nationwide competitions. In fact, her partner won the Junior British dance ice skating championships wearing one of her costumes.

Amy says her most stressful bridal seamstress moment was trying to clean red wine stains out of her sister’s wedding dress on her wedding day before the photos. Her funniest seamstress job was when she made a mini dog tutu for a wedding cake figurine!

Madeline may be the most junior bridal seamstress at The Secret Fitting Room, but she is by far the most talented embroiderer and beading expert.

Every Monday morning, we look forward to hearing what incredible things Madeline has made over the weekend. Our favourites so far include an octopus costume, a one metre high knitted llama, and her own Harry Potter hat and scarf!
